Third Class have been busy making these lovely poppies for this year’s CAFE Festival 🌞
3rd class had great fun during P.E. on Friday enjoying the sunny day while developing their fundamental movement skills. 🌞
The teachers and pupils from the Butterfly & Réalta classes would like to thank Amanda Gallagher and all the children from Carrabane Pre-school for their very kind donation. The pupils in the pre-school held a pyjama day in March and collected funds to help resource the Réalta and Butterfly classes. The pre-schoolers came down to Carrabane N.S. to present the cheque on Tuesday morning last.
Their donation is greatly appreciated!
Siobhán Grogan, Ursula Lennon & all the pupils from the Butterfly & Réalta Classes.
3rd Class have been working on developing good running skills and learning about staying healthy. They have been practising finding and recording their heart rate (beats per minute/BPM) and have been comparing their BPM before and after exercise.
- Before running: Record in your homework journal your heart rate BPM by setting a timer to 1 minute and counting how many beats your heart makes in that time.
- Run to a fast paced song e.g. Sensitive Guy by Busted. Songs cannot be posted here for Copyright reasons but there are plenty of great running songs online (run a safe search on www.kidrex.org to find many great running songs).
- After running: Record in your homework journal your heart rate BPM by setting a timer to 1 minute and counting how many beats your heart makes in that time.
- Most importantly, have fun!
Every November the international Bebras®Computing Challenge is run to motivate students to problem-solve based on informatics concepts. The Challenge is made of a set of timed short questions called Bebras® tasks and are delivered and completed online. Tasks can be answered without prior knowledge about computational thinking or information and communication technology, but are clearly related to computational thinking concepts. Participants get 45 minutes to answer 15 multiple-choice questions that focus on computational and logical thinking. The Bebras® Computing Challenge is an international competition — in 2016 over 1,610,000 students from 34 countries took part.
This year was Ireland’s first year to take part in the Bebras® Computing Challenge which was launched by the Irish Computer Society Foundation and supported by Science Foundation Ireland and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Students in Carrabane National School participated in this challenge in November and we were delighted when four of our students, Aoife Keane, Daniel Egan, Mark Cormican and Vivienne Rushe qualified for the National Bebras Finals. These finals took place last Saturday, 22nd April in NUI, Maynooth and we were thrilled to learn that Vivienne Rushe scored highest in her category at the National Finals. Congratulations to Vivienne on an outstanding achievement. We are very proud of all of our students who reached the finals and congratulate them on this achievement. And remember, this challenge will take place again in November so keep practising and it could be you next time!
Special thanks to Nicole from Galway Autism Partnership who visited our school today to talk to the children for World Autism Awareness Week. During the discussion, Nicole showed an excellent video Amazing things happen which is an introduction to autism that aims to raise awareness among young non-autistic audiences, to stimulate understanding and tolerance in future generations. It is intended to be viewed, discussed and shared widely by anyone but especially teachers and parents:
Fifth and Sixth Class had great fun over the last few weeks constructing in art. Their task was to create something from World War II. We had everything from Anne Frank’s house to fighter jets to a scene from “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. Well done to all!
Carrabane National School took part again this year in the Naomh Breandan Credit Union Quiz 2017. One of the 6th class teams came first and will go on to compete in the County Finals in March. A 4th class team came in 3rd place. Congratulations to all of the teams who participated in the quiz. You were terrific!
