More Pictures from our Fun Science Day
Science is Fun!
The 5th & 6th class pupils of Carrabane NS had a very enjoyable day on Tuesday the 18th of February when Emmet Mahony a secondary school science teacher attended their classroom. Emmet and the class completed many interesting and exciting experiments that gave the children an insight into what they will be studying in the secondary school science curriculum in the years to come. As you can see from the pictures below a great day was had by all.
Engineering Week
Engineering Week was celebrated across Ireland between the 9th and 15th of February. As part of Engineering Week 5th & 6th class children from Carrabane NS attended an Engineering Trail at Galway Atlantaquaria.
The trail looked at how important engineering is to the aquarium and covered topics such as structural engineering and how the building is constructed, mechanical engineering and how water is brought into and moved around our tanks, and bio-medical and bio-engineering and how marine life may hold the answer to immortal life and natural glues.
Students carried out an engineering related activity when they constructed their own Rockets
Therese Maher & Tony Ward visit our school
We were delighted to welcome All-Ireland camogie champion Therese Maher and Manager Tony Ward to our school on Monday, February 3rd. They brought the Sean O’Duffy (senior) and the Jack McGrath (intermediate) cups to show the children. Both Therese and Tony got a great reception from all pupils. Therese has a special connection with the school as her nephews Stephen and Daniel Keane are pupils in our school.
Grandparents Day 2014
As part of Catholic Schools Week, the school held a special prayer service for Grandparents and asked all the children to invite their Grandparents along. Their prayers included prayers for the many grandparents who have died in the last year. We would like to thank all our pupils who helped to organise the day and all our grandparents who attended from near and far. We hope to see you all back again next year.
Active Breaks
We are currently working towards achieving our first active school flag. This flag is awarded by the Department of Education and Skills to schools who strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. Our 5th and 6th class pupils are working with our younger pupils at lunch times to help them to learn new games and be active in the school yard. They are teaching the pupils new and old yard games, skipping and how to play co-operatively. This has been very successful due to our pupils and their teachers who have co-ordinated this initiative. We will be working on some new initiatives in 2014 to help our school community become more active. Here are some photos showing our senior pupils teaching our younger pupils.
